Apple iPhone "destined for failure"

It’s a good time today to remember Al, Laura Ries and the gems of their wisdom.

The marketing consultants predicted [1, 2, 3, 4] a year ago:

  • “The iPhone will do a lot of things but it will do nothing well. And that is why it is destined for failure” and
  • “If the iPod is the biggest success of the 21st century then iPhone is likely to be the biggest flop of the 21st century.”

Disqualifying.

Dănuţ:

“There have been many convergence devices in the past and all have been failures. Including: ROKR, N-Gage and the Nokia Communicator.”

Asta plus aia cu “Remember the Newton?” m-au convins - Laura habar n-are despre ce vorbeşte

Kit:

Laura and her illustrious father are oblivious to the notion of design excellence and the user experience that emerges from this. And—even more interesting—they seem to be equally unaware of the power a brand like Apple has. And, as consultants, their job is to know.

Or—they’re ill-intended for some reason.

Anyway. Their school of thought (“being the first” positioning) is so dated it’s mostly inapplicable/irrelevant nowadays.
