&lt;p&gt;It's an incentives problem, the vast majority will never start doing 'the right thing' just because of ethics.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Regarding the ethics part: I'm pretty sure this kind of mess cannot happen in printed newspapers. Blame it on the lack of people or the lack of tradition, but the flexibility and immediacy of the medium seems to render the journalistic ethics pretty flexible as well.&lt;/p&gt;
