Apple Theft and then dick move

Publishing the name, photographs, and personal information of the Apple engineer who lost the phone is irrelevant to the story. It was the dick move to end all dick moves. [...] This, I’m deeply offended by.

—John Gruber in Gizmodo and the Prototype iPhone, the account of a high-profile theft.

i call shenanigans - i'm more and more inclined to see this as a staged thing. Conspiracy lovers, welcome one more aboard!

Why on earth would Apple need dishonest PR maneuvers when their secrecy (and the ensuing rumor mill) works perfectly well?

And why on earth would they need that mess now, when iPhone 3G sells perfectly well and such a move could cannibalize that?

No. I'm not buying the "staged thing" theory.

... Not to mention that playing dirty could potentially damage their most precious asset: the Apple brand. And for a short-time gain?

So, — no.

Eugen Erhan:

i'm not buying the 'guy loses iphone prototype in a bar', when apple's secrecy is such a perfect air-tight marvel.

one reason would be that the phone looks kinda different, and maybe for once in their history apple needs some market testing prior to launch. and the free media frenzy. (maybe plain old apple-silence wasn't expected to generate enough attention for the 4th launch of an iphone).

true about the cannibalization of the iphone 3g sales - that's the only thing that counterbalances the 'apple employee loses prototype in a bar' on the wtf axis :)
